Fannie Mae Metcalf's life comprised ambition, dedication, and love. Born in Coahoma County, Mississippi on February 18, 1932 to Willie and Rosella Walls. Fannie was raised with three brothers, Jhugh, Willie James, and Charles, and was a curious and eager learner from a young age. She was known as "Mott" in her youth and "Muddear" in later years by family and close friends. Fannie married Bishop Isaac Metcalf in 1947 and together they had 14 children, Claude, Hattie, Myzella, Dorice, Zinnet, Joe, Jhugh, Delores, Jerry, Isaac, Travis, Calvin, Kay, and Myrrie.

Fannie supported her husband in his pastoral work and helped establish New Mount Zion C.O.G.I.C. in rural Marks, Mississippi. She continued to work on the farm to support their family in addition to their pastoral responsibilities. After relocating to Kansas City, Missouri in 1970, Fannie and Isaac started the Apostles' Doctrine Fellowship church in 1974, and Fannie served in various roles in the church, including Sunday school, Mother Board, Usher Board, Choir, the church outlet store, and food pantry. Her favorite scripture was Hebrews 12:14 (NCV), “Try to live in peace with all people, and try to live free from sin. Anyone whose life is not holy will never see the Lord.”

Fannie became a “Gold Star” mother in 1969 when she lost her oldest son, PFC Claudie B. Metcalf, a United States Army, Medical Corpsman during the Vietnam War. Even with the tragic loss of her firstborn, Fannie did not discourage six of her other children who later also decided to serve in the military.

She was also passionate about education and inspired her children to create the Isaac & Fannie Metcalf Education Foundation after Isaac's passing in 2006. She coordinated several activities annually to raise funds for the foundation. Additionally, she asked all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to pledge an annual amount to the foundation. One of Fannie’s final directives was, to “donate to the foundation in lieu of flowers.”

Fannie was a beloved member of her community and traveled extensively to spend time with family and friends. Her travel took her to other countries such as Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Israel, Egypt, and to various cities throughout the United States, Including Hawaii, and Alaska as she endeavored to impart into her descendants wherever they were located personally.

She passed away on September 8, 2023, preceded in death by her parents, brothers, husband, and three of her children: Claudie, Hattie, and Myzella. Fannie leaves behind an army of family members and friends to celebrate her life and cherish her memory: One Aunt: Dora Powell, Gary, IN; Two Sisters-In-Law: Martha Albertina Simond and Johnnie Metcalf, Milwaukee, WI. Six daughters: Pastor Dorice (Elder Melvin) Merritt, Pastor Delores (Donald) Davis, all of Kansas City, MO; Missionary Zinnet Harris, Walls, SD; Evangelist Jerry (Deacon Ralph) Carter, Prescott Valley, AZ; Kay (Ebenezer) Bodude, and Myrrie (Hernandez) Hayes of Peoria, AZ; Five Sons: Pastors Joe (Marie) Metcalf, Minister Travis (Rachel) Metcalf, Isaac (JaVona) Metcalf, Calvin (Andrea) Metcalf all of Kansas City, MO; Elder Jhugh (LTC(R) Cristina Bagay) Metcalf, Havre De Grace, MD. Three Stepsons: Elder W. L. Haygood, Clarksdale, MS; Tommy (Catherine) Doyle, Olive Branch, MS; Michael Crouch, Milwaukee, WS. BFF Grandson: Terrail King, Scottdale, AZ; Sixty-One Grandchildren, Eighty-Nine Great Grandchildren and Eight Great-Great Grandchildren. Plus, a host of other In-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and the Apostles’ Doctrine Fellowship family.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM on Friday, September 22, 2023, at Calvary Chapel Church Of God In Christ, 5101 Bristol Avenue, Kansas City, MO. A visitation will be held starting at 9:00 AM before the church service. The burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri.
